If the mother is married to the father, he is automatically assumed to be the father and his name is on the birth certificate. If the mother is not married then there are two ways for the father's name to be put on the birth certificate. The first is by him signing an affidavit of paternity, the second is through a chain of custody paternity test (which can be asked for by either parent). So the answer to your question is no.

No. The father has to sign some papers, then his name can be added to the birth certificate. I've gone through this with 3 of my friends, and my mother in law works in the childbirth wing of the local hospital. Good Luck!

Yes, I plan to add Bill Gates.
Seriously though, you shouldn't be able to add the father's name if you are unmarried unless he signs an affidavit of paternity. I REALLY hope that states will start demanding a DNA test before the father's name is added. This will reduce the incidences of men finding out that the child isn't his 3-4 years down the road.

to the birth certificate or what?
Yes you can add the father's name without consent but he isn't required to pay child support without a DNA test first. I agree with Doodlest...that's a great idea to demand paternity tests regardless if the father thinks it is necessary or not. It would save a lot of heartache down the road if the father is not who they thought.

The mother used to be able to name basically whoever she wanted. I believe that nowadays though, you cannot add the father's name without his permission.

You aren't supposed to be able to. At my first child's birth they wanted his signature to add him to the certificate.
