Q&A asks for ideas and occasionally a questioner asks about events, but there's no gossip (or should be no gossip) on Q&A because of community rules.
If there's no one around to gossip about then everything that's said could be considered necessary information, and so there needs to be a 4th section to your famous quote. I guess the writer never anticipated the arrival of the computer.

there is no proper amount of time to spend in each. the assumption is that the quote is based on maturity levels. i often find myself floating between all three of them. for instance tthe other day my family was sitting at the dinner table and we talked about everything we could think of. we talked about our beliefs in God, my wedding, and my sister's new boyfriend. that doesnt mean that we are small minded people or that were average or even great. it could just mean that there are times in peoples lives when they focus on ideas (school, religion etc), times when they discuss events (weddings, deaths, baby births, etc) and times when they talk about people (husbands, wives, kids, etc.).
its not about how we use our minds, its about our communication. our communication should reach all of theses dimensions including R&S equally. thats what the saying truly means.

I totally agree. I find myself discussing ideas A LOT and it never occured to me fully until just now when I read this question. Part of life, of course, involves discussing events (childbirth, holidays, weddings, etc.) and gossip (Did you hear Susie is pregnant? or Bobby broke his nose in a fist-fight.) but I definetly spend the majority of my time discussing ideas I have had or debating other peoples' idea's. Thanks.

One time I was with Brasky in the back of a pickup truck, along with a live deer.
Brasky goes up to the deer and says, 'I'm Bill Brasky! SAY IT!' Then he manipulates the deer's lips in such a way as to make it say, 'Billbrasky' ...
It wasn't exactly like it, but it was pretty good for a deer

I agree. I think R&S has the potential to be of the first category, though more often than not, it devolves to the last.
