There are no guarantees that one shot will stop a bad guy every time. The best chance is with a .45acp, as a CCW firearm (yes I know that a 500S&W and a .44mag etc are great stoppers), but realisticly, who carries a 500S&W for CCW?. But the .40S&W is a very very good cartridge (even if it is just an anemic .45acp ;0) !!) anyway, I think the best performing round out there it the new Hornady TAP cartridge. That isn't to say that others aren't good, just that in my opinion, based on the latest stats, the TAP round performs very well.

There is not best one shot stopper unless you use a really over powered handgun. Then you have to worry about over penatration.

The 40 S&W is a good defancive round. I think it might just be the optimal cartridge. Why Believe me I love my 45 acp but the 40 offers a smaller diameter casing which allows you to carry more ammo. It offers more power and better performance that the 9mmL. Recoil from what I have seen is not that much different than a 9mmL and a whole lot better than the 45acp.

Many of the 1911 clones that are shorter 4" suffer reliability problems. Where as a glock sig or other pistols do not suffer that bad in the short barrel.

Thre is NO SUCH THING as a one shot stop round, not even the redoubtable 12ga slug for a shotgun. There are horror stories how some GI's shot VC's [the Viet Cong] with a 12 ga, and only to lose them in the bushes.

Speer Gold Dot as mentioned before is an excellent choice.

I carry the 180gr. Gold Dot but if want it to guarantee a one shot stop place it between their teeth, barrel level and square and shoot.

There's no such thing as "best one shot stop" rounds, whether it be 9mm or .500. Put it through their nose, and it'll be a one shot stop.
