its a possibility...depends on the type of engineer....also in contrast to what Shan is saying, some AF jobs do deploy for a full year also i may add these guys dont get the 2 week midtour break that the army gets and they are only guaranteed 6 months between deployments (because the do 18 month rotations because they USED to do 3-4 month deployments) my husband is about to do his 4th iraq rotation......never shorter than 8 months , this will be the second time its been a full year and hes only been home 10 months.

I can say with good authority that Engineers may be used to build runways, hangers, and structures that the Air Force may need in a combat situation.

When I was sent to Tuzla, Yugoslavia when it was hot we had to build a runway for supply airplanes for the ground troops. We seen combat and had casualties.

Chances of him being deployed into a dangerous situation is an absolute reality. For instance, they need a runway in a hot area in Iraq... the engineers will usually be the ones to construct it.

I am not trying to scare you, but the nature of the military is always dangerous ... even cooks and clerks are needed in combat areas. That is why we are -all- trained to shoot and fight.

Deployments depend on unit, location, rank, needs of the USAF, skill level, AEF Rotation, and deployability status. There is no specific job called engineer in the USAF. What is his specific AFSC? If he is a flight engineer then he will go where ever his aircraft goes. If he is a civil engineer then he will be doing mostly construction, including warzones. We also have Aeronautical Engineers, Astronautical Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, hell even Train Engineers. Mostly this is an unanswerable question.

When you sign up for any branch of the military you must understand that they can and will send you to anywhere they determine you are needed.

I don't know what engineers do in the Air Force, but in the army they do anything from building roads and bridges to deploying land mines.

I'm not sure what an engineer does in the Air Force, so I can't tell you where they'll need him. He very well may deploy, but that's his job now.

He'll go wherever they decide they need Air Force engineers, so it's definitely a possibility. But he could also go to Japan or any number of other places around the globe.

It is entirely possible. However, Air Force deployments are short (3 - 6 months) in contrast to the other branches of the military. Army, Navy and Marines are 12 - 18 months, National Guard is 15 months.

I wouldn't worry. They don't park $80+ million dollar aircraft around where anyone can take a shot at them.
