They were the Nephilim, a race of "giants" who were the offspring of Angelic beings who came to mate with human women. They were part-man, part-demon whose soul was enternally evil and corrupt.
They were part of Satan's plan to wipe out the pure seed of man through interbreeding of the Nephilim. Satan wanted to create a pure master race of Nephilim. Thereby turning every single person on earth against God.
Had this succeeded the earth would be filled with a species of man whose heart was always evil continually and always against God. That's why the flood was sent to wipe out the Nephilim since their species had almost overrun the entire human race.
*** Whether the Nephilim were giants in stature or giants in deed its hard to say. The literal translation simply has the term "fallen ones" to describe the Nephilim. Only a few translations have the term giants on them. I personally don't believe they were actual literally giants. I think they were just bigger men who had extraordiary abilities of some sort.

They were hybrids (offspring of angels and women). They were giants and very violent.
They were "renowned" or "of fame" because everyone knew about them.
EDIT: ALL the Nephilim were destroyed in the Flood of Noah's day. Goliath was just a huge man, but his parents were fully human.

Nephilim, "Giants", spawn of Angels who realized that the pleasures of the "Flesh" here on Earth WERE preferable to the dubious fantasy pleasures of "God's" Heaven.
A wise man would deduce that if the very ANGELS were defecting, it was NOT a place HE wanted to go to.

They were giant warriors. They were not the offspring of angelic beings. Angelic beings are spirit and cannot mate with a human. These giants were human and were called Nephillim because of their size.
