Why? Because it is easier to control people using fear than using knowledge. Wicca is not the root word, I believe the root word you may be looking for is "Wicce" which loosely translates to "wise one". And as has been noted by others if you are not "for God" (via Jesus) then you are against him and that means you must be in league with the devil.
And I find myself saying it yet again:
NOT ALL WITCHES ARE WICCAN! I am a witch and have been practicing for over 40 years.
One thing I have always found amusing is how most Christians can't seem to take responsibility when something in their life goes wrong, they always blame the devil. And lately witches have become scapegoats as well. If it wasn't the devil then a witch must have cast a spell or cursed them.

Oh good grief. Who told you that the root of the word Wicca means "harm none"? Never heard that before. people used to claim it meant "wise one," and that wasn't correct either ("wizard" is closer to that translation). Wicca is the Old English root word of witch and means the same.
Witches historically were those who worked malevolent magic. The accusation os witchcraft did not always imply association with Satan. The association was very rare in England, for example, although I don't think it unreasonable to think that someone willing to cause supernatural murder might be working with the devil.
The idea of "witch" being a neutral or possitive term is a very modern understanding of the word.

Actually, the root of the word "Wicca" means "wise." But the Wiccan Rede's primary rule is "harm none."
The biggest reason they are associated with the devil is because of folk legends from centuries ago, in which they flew on brooms and consorted with demons and such. It's all fake, of course.
Hollywood movies don't help, either, especially when there are people who don't understand the concept of "fiction". (All of you who think Harry Potter = real "witchcraft," you know who you are.)

I think you'll find that it's down to some people just not growing up in their beliefs. I just laugh whenever I hear anyone call a Wiccan or a Pagan a Devil Worshipper- it's such a silly point of view and very baseless!

I was going to start this post with "I'm sorry, honey, but you've been talking to the wrong people," but Nightwind stole my thunder.
Wicca is only 60-some-odd years old. I know, I've lived through over half of it, over 20 of my years as a practitioner of Wicca itself.

Because like the bulk of monothiest faiths christianity thinks there are 2 sources of spiritual power in the universe "god" and "satan" (which comes from a middle-eastern word that simply means "opposition" or "rival") therfeore any religion that does not follow "god" and it`s teachings are automatically followers of "satan" and therefore evil.
oh..and like most middle eastern monothiest religions christianity sees women as "unclean"

Because the word "witch" has gotten a bad rap thanks to religion.
When a person of religion hears the word "witch", they almost always visualize "The Wicked Witch of the West."
Nobody ever stops to remember that Glinda was a witch too...

The essence of witchcraft is the art of magic which attempts to control people &/or nature by the use of spells, rituals etc. This usually involves assistance from demons and is thoroughly condemned in the Bible. Evidence for all this can be read in 'From Witchcraft To Christ' by Doreen Irvine.

I can only speak for why Christians believe.
In the bible it says that holy people can do miracles because of power of God. But psychics, sorcerers, and the like get their power from Satan.
No matter the root of the word, Islam means to surrender or submit...yet they do not do this...
