I'd sincerely like to treat him to lunch for his birthday but I'm afraid it will be interpreted by either him or my co-workers as brown-nosing. What should I do?

why not get a group of people from your office to take him to lunch - that way it wont look like you're brown nosing

I would get a group of people, like the people in your department or team, to all go in on it together. We did a similar thing in my office for Boss Day - all us girls took the bosses (2 male lawyers) to a nice restaurant for Boss Day and we paid (they usually take US to lunch and they pay). This way we were all involved and it didn't look like anyone was brown nosing even though I came up with the idea originally.
:-)

Or, you could bring in cookies or a cake or something the boss would like and say that you wanted to bring in something for his birthday. Everyone can eat the goodies, the boss gets the sentiment and you can feel good that you made a nice gesture.

How about instead you ask your co workers if they'd like to bring some things for sorta a potluck birthday luncheon for him? Kinda like a surprise bday party...tell your co workers you truely enjoy your boss(theyre are aweful ones out there) and instead of doing somethign just from you that you want to include everyone so your intentions are not misinterpreted

Yes, it will be !

Unless your boss is also a personal friend and you do this regularly.

I would have a collection around thee office and buy him a gift and present it at the office. Alternatively you could organise a "Go Dutch" lunch that all your colleagues attend. You can then surreptitiously pay for his lunch and it won't be noticed.

Not really.

Don't worry about what everyone else thinks, take the boss to lunch, and don't bring up any business unless your boss does. Discuss hobbies, family, and sports. This way, your boss will know you are being sincere.

Tell him you want to take him to lunch, and that you aren't trying to kiss up, you just want to wish him a happy birthday.

Eff your co-workers.

Get all your coworkers together who can manage to leave at the same time. Take up a collection first so you can cover your boss's tab. Trust me, if you did it all by yourself, it WOULD be brownnosing!
