If you want to have your butter at room temperature all the time, you need to invest in a "butter bell". This little ceramic device will keep your butter from going rancid and also keep it at room temp so it is spreadable.

You can find these for sale in a lot of different places. Try Ebay.

I have done it all my life and it is fine.
It is pure fat so not really different from other oil products.
I find the thing that goes bad is not the butter but if any crumbs of anything else get in it it will grow stuff.
Yes it is dairy but it is pure fat. It is not the same as leaving your milk out.
You don't want it too warm and you should be using it up fairly quickly. Put out small amounts only in a covered dish to be spreadable.

its alright to leave out during use time then put back in frig at times not useing it. most bakeries leave out during the day and put it away at nights. when i was still working we needed soft butter all day long, we would leave two or three cases layed out on sheet trays for days and rotate the oldest frist. we never had a problem, the high fat in the butter keeps it from molding , but where the problem comes in if something comes in contact with it ,like just a crum off a slice of bread some body butters then that will mold. but in its pure state it will be no problem , even in moderate heat. good luck and good baking,bacondebaker

Butter will keep twice as long when refrigerated (as referenced from Sealtest and Land-O-Lakes website.

As long as the temperature is reasonable, you can leave it out for a little while (2-3 days) as long as you use it soon after and don't re-refrigerate (if thats a word).

A butter container will also keep it on the shelf longer by snapping closed and keeping any germs out, and prevent spoilage.

you can but it will spoil. If you have a large enough family that it will get used up every couple of days it is alright. don't leave it out for extended periods of time. It will stink when it goes bad. There is milk- Buttermilk in the butter. that is what spoils. not the fat.

I remember my mom always used a cover butter dish when I was a kid and it seemed to be ok. Nothing worse than having hard butter when trying to put it on toast. lol

If you use it quickly enough, you can keep it in a covered butter dish. But butter can go rancid.

Yes, as long as you use butter on a regular basis. You wouldn't want one stick sitting around for a couple of months. It's not going to go bad if you have it out for a week, if that's what you're getting at.
