On a television promotion for a new show on the SPIKE network the announcer uses the term "white trash". Isn't this a racial slur? Why is okay to use racial slurs that refer to white people? Is pay back for past transgressions?

Here's the deal. It is not OK.

The White Americans in this country should not have to pay for what other white people did a long time ago.

Hell, our parents weren't even born yet. C'mon America.

Anything racist should not be brought up on TV.

America needs to stop being so needy and everyone needs to stop blaming previous generations for their short comings get over it. The only reason I know what I know is from learning it in school.

You never had to go through segregation. But I do understand that you feel the pain of your ancestors but do not blame that on what is wrong today. Move forward America. The blame game is over.

NO RACIAL SLURS ON TV EVER FOR ANYONE!

Most television has already been basically WET. What's the point of adding a dedicated channel additionally? BET was created because there was a noticeable lack of Black-produced, black-interest television. What treatment are you looking for in asking for a WET? Are you finding a shortage of shows about white people? If WET was going to be a big hit, it would have already been created.

I think because it's more a stereotype or generalization.
im pretty sure "white trash" doesnt have 400 years of built up opression loaded into it lol. Because "N" was used negatively toward black people in the 1800s and apparently they still find the word offensive. The word is distasteful and messed up. The word is not defined as black person, but as a person of any race or origin regarded as contemptible, inferior, ignorant, etc. it is Extremely Disparaging and Offensive and consider yourself low and inconsiderate and messed up for using this word.

White trash has no history to it. White people did not suffer to gain acceptance or equivilance from anyone.

I do see your point, while being an extremely good one, there is a stigma with issues like these and you are only wasting your breath or points in this case. I wish it could be an actual equality but it will never happen.

However, George Carlin makes a good comparison point with handicapped people and in his punch lines he has a lot of truisms that i totally agree with.

I also think that people usually dont just call a white person, white trash for no reason..usually have some reasoning, sadly. But black people get called the N word just for being that color.

I'm white, and i use that slur white trash, if I see a WHITE person doing something like having sex with someone in their family, I would use the term white trash, I have no problem with it... You are who you are... But I do not like n word at all. Do not say it to me do not say it around me.

Good points- Thought the same thing the other night when I was watching a Court Chanel thing and a Texas attorney asked a news person "Do I have to be interviewed standing next to this white trash"

Because white trash isn't as horrible as some racial slurs that are used. There are racial slurs used on TV that do not refer to the white race, but I am too much of a lady to post them here. Just open your ears and you will hear them.

There are a lot of movies and television shows whose producers/writers are heavily biased. That's part of human nature. Culturally, it's okay to say whatever the heck you want to say. It's a free country. Morally, of course it's not okay. The idea behind a more peaceful world is not payback for transgressions.
Forgive and forget. That's just not the path society likes to take, so that's one of those things we just have to deal with.

I am white and what I don't understand is why is it ok for some black people to call each other the "N" word, but a white person does it and it's a racial slur.. could someone please tell me why? I don't go around calling my friends "crackers" or anything like that.

there is a different class of white people just like there is a different class of black people. the word that they use for black people is much more harsh and has a meaning to it that you will NEVER understand. if you take offense to that then, what does that say about you? im black and i'll say this, if someone called all black people N******, i definitely wouldnt be mad cause it's not me and they are the ignorant ones to think that. if it's not you then, dont worry about it. they can say that on tv. perfect example of white trash is britany spears, right?

It has become a common term to use...and white people don't object to it enough. Furthermore, because it refers to a particular class within society...it fits, because they don't just live in trailers anymore, so you can't call them trailer trash, can you?
