There are a lot of old shows in reruns. But how do they pick them? And why are some of them never shown (at least where I live). I would love to see old episodes of Mod Squad, Emergency, Hawaii 5-0, MacMillan & Wife, etc.... but can never find them on any of the 300+ channels we get on cable.

It depends on what shows those particular channels are going to make money on (what people are going to watch). The TV business is all about ratings and advertising. If a channel feels that people will watch those shows you mentioned, they'll probably be on. If there is little or no audience, advertisers don't want to waste money so they probably won't be on.

it simply means, a million shows are created everyday so all they want you to do is watch new once.
or
they want you to enjoy watching & then buy your copy if you want more.
