We recently switched my baby from breast milk to whole milk (pediatrician's request) and we have noticed that he's been getting constipated. What can I do to help him ease the constipation. My poor son puches and puches and nothing comes out and if something comes out is a itty bitty ball of poop.

♣Thanks in advance for your feedback.

My daughter had the same problem when I weaned her. She is now a year old. Her pediatrician told me to give her "P" fruits and veggies (i.e. peaches, pears, prunes, peas) She also said that Apple, Pear, and Prune juices work great too. Avoid bananas (very constipating) and low fiber foods. I feel for you and your little one, I know exactly what you are going through. I hope my advice helps you.

You can buy glycerin suppositories for infants at any pharmacy including Walmart. They also have stool softeners. Adding extre water to the formula while he gets used to it helps. Also a teaspoon of corn syrup in the formula will act as a natural laxative. The bad thing about the formula is the "sweet". He may want that all the time. They make baby prune juice too. My grandson was a preemie and had these issues even with breast milk. Theses were the instructions from the pediatrician. I hope you find them useful.

Try some mineral oil. If you keep it chilled in the fridge it tastes sweet and my daughter wanted more of it when I would give her a little spoonful. You can sneak it in the juice. I also gave her raisins and put a little prune juice in her regular juice. Make sure your son stops eating bananas and apples because both of those fruits can cause constipation (per my daughter's pediatrician's advice).

Try prune juice or something called little tummies should help. Talk to your doctor and see what they suggest. My daughter was lactose intolerant and we had to give her lactiad or soy milk instead of whole milk she was breast feed as well. So talk to your doctor let him/her know whats going on. I say change the milk to something like lactaid its pricey but you should be fine. PS if you apply for WIC they will help you with the milk as long as you fall under the income guidelines. PS my daughter was able to tolerate whole milk when she became 3 years old. Give your child time not every childs body handles it the same way. Wishing you peace and Blessings.

Ah bless, same thing happened when I switched my daughter from breast milk to formula. she got real constapated and I found the best thing that helped was giving her (in between feeds) a bottle of freshly boiled, cooled water. works a treat. some people will suggest putting brown sugar in the water but i dont personally like the idea of giving kids sugary water and plain water seemed to work fine! Good luck!

Put a little corn syrup in his milk, thats what we always did, over three generations worth, never hurt any of us.

Dont give him any other dairy. Make sure he's getting veggies and fiber. And make sure he gets plenty of water.

His body will adjust to it in a few weeks. The constipation is normal.

apple juice is what worked best for my kids, its important to keep them going regular because my first son got a fisher from being constipated. That is very painful for a baby. If the apple juice fails your baby, call the doctor and ask what they can suggest

Give him some apple juice. If that doesn't work, you can mix 1/2 a teaspoon mineral oil into a small amount of rice cereal or apple sauce and feed him that.

Ears...Rears...and Mother's Fears...that's what pediatrics is all about...Constipation is EXTREMELY common and is rarely dangerous...
Treatment revolves around introducing foods that allow for better bowel movements.
Do's - prunes, beans, peas, pears, apple juice, oatmeal, raisins, bran containing muffins/breads.
Don'ts - cheese, yogurt, pastas, bananas, carrots, sweet potatoes, white bread, peanut butter (no nuts til 2 anyway).
Good luck, and good pooping!
