we use to have rail service and unless you were on a mail run (where they stop at every town to pick up mail....not done anymore) it was comfortable and fun...but the RR have quite trying to compete with other methods ...hence they have nothing to attract riders....but i see no reason why it could work again

You can travel on passenger train. It's Amtrack, which by the way is part of the US government. Why is that the case?
Rail used to be a major form of travel in the US. But the railroad industry eventually gave up on it because they were not able to make money doing it (due to changing demographics, competition from cars and airplanes etc). So the government started subsidizing service through Amtrack.

It's because consumer is able to afford the air service in this country. And the foremost reason is time. It takes 4 hours to get from Washington D.C to NewYork Union Station by amtrak and pay ~$100.00. And by airline I stll need to pay $100 but travel in less than 2 hours including the check-in time!
And on the downside not travelling by rail you will miss the landscape, conversion with folks around you. Also there is good chance you will be in time by rail as compared to airline delays...

i've got confidence that the biggest element retaining beck passenger rail interior the U. S. is passenger rail. by regulation passenger trains working on freight rr track have precedence. in spite of this Amtrak won't be able to get from a to b on time in fairly some the country. yet another element retaining it returned is the wasteful attempt of amtrak to run go-united states of america. we could face it, the U. S. is in basic terms too super for rail provider to be competetive on long routes. IMO they could desire to be targeting a community community, I comprehend they do fairly nicely interior the northeast.

I have taken a train to Arizona. It was expensive and uncomfortable. A trip to San Diego costs over 50 bucks and I could drive for 20 bucks worth of gas and no hassle with tickets, waiting, or screaming kids. I took a train trip in Alaska that was really nice and I loved the train in Germany but most the US simply doesn't work very well and is inconvenient.
