I started with the new testament believe it or not. I read the gospels first, then I went back and read all of the old testament and then I read the remainder of the new testament after St. John.
Get a study bible... it really helps!
A chapter a night... or as many as you can get through... but don't just read to read... read to learn! You want to retain the information!

Long story short, I would start in the New Testament first so you can fall in love with the savior and then go back to the old testament so you can see the history behind why Jesus came. Here's why:
2 Corinthians 3:14-16
But their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away. Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.
________________
Moses is found in the old testament and the passage above remains true. If you try to read the bible as if it's a regular book and you start out from the beginning there really isn't any basis to continue to the end. The reason is that a veil will be set on your eyes and on your heart. When you get to the book of Numbers, you may be turned off because it will start listing names and names and names of tribes and such and you may get bored and discouraged. The bible therefore, is not meant for knowledge or for stories, it's actually meant as a opening to be saved. There are many accounts in the bible written as warnings and then there are many accounts written so that you can believe in Jesus, repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins. THE WHOLE BIBLE is about what happened so that the messiah would have to come, then it tells about that messiah, and then it shows you whent he messiah came and when he died for us and then even what happened after Jesus left...

To read the whole bible is one thing But to understand it is another thing, First you need to be born again & have the teacher which is the Holy Ghost, I would rather read one verse & know the meaning then to read a whole chapter & don't know anymore then I did before I started to read. You will never understand it without a spiritual mind, I have been a Christian for over 37 yrs. & I am still learning. But what I do know, there is no one nor any demonic spirit that can make me believe that I am not walking in Truth because I am walking in truth.

You can go into any Christian Bookstore, and there they will have the "How to read the Bible in a year" charts, which gives you a formula of scriptures to read each day. It works pretty good. I have just on my own though, read the entire Bible twice. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. There are so many things happening at all times, you never get bored, though Numbers can get tedious.
Enjoy Brother...

1) Start at the beginning.
2) Get a GOOD translation with explanation of translations. I would suggest the Anchor Bible. (I think it has a volume for every book of both the old and new testament).
3) Get a BIG bucket and keep it nearby -- because you will probably have a BIG urge to throw up when you see "God's" directives about women, children, and the enemies of the Jews.
4) And please don't worry TOO much about the 2000 or so contradictions.
5) And skip Matthew. Just too blame many errors in his reconstruction of the prophetic message of the old testamant. Oh he even gets the name of one of the major prophets wrong.
6) Better yet -- just turn on Pat Robertson and let your brain corrode away.

You can save yourself a lot of time if, instead of reading the entire bible (I assume you refer to the KJV), you spend your time reading about what scholars have discovered about the bible and the history of religion.
I realize that most believers are not really interested enough in their professed religion to actually want to know as much about it as scholars have discovered so, that suggestion might fall on deaf ears.
This would be normal. You always have the option that most choose...allow someone else to...tell you...what to believe!

Read it like you're studying. Take a piece of paper and note down characters, timeline and put some small notes. After some time you will noticed a pattern and due to the number of characters, places and events it tends to get confusing after a while.
And do keep an open mind. Don't take each word literally. ^_^

Start with the Gospels. As another had stated, there are tons of good study guides and study bibles. Find a Family Christian Bookstore, or other for starts.
