Seriously, I have just read that he invented it and the thumbs back it up.

Is this true?

henry viii broke from roman catholicism, but did not really found anglicanism since his church was identical with catholicism in all points except that catholics considered the pope the head of the church, anglicans the king of england.

the real founders of anglicanism was henry's son edward vi, since the church of england only becomes a protestant church when edward vi issues the book of common prayer (1549)with a properly protestant doctrinal stance.

in fact the real founder of anglicanism were the two lords protector somerset and northumberland, since edward vi was a twelve year old in poor health who was easily bullied by his uncles.

edward was even persuaded to disinherit his two sisters - the catholic mary and the moderate protestant elizabeth - in favour of the lady jane grey whose nine day reign after edward's death precipitated a civil war.

the early history of the anglican church is the kind of running chaos of domestic and foreign disaster mixed with religious purges and counter-purges which will seem all too familiar to present pakistan-watchers.

but i wouldn't expect modern day protestants to know anything about this.

or anything else, really.

[edit]

king james contribution to the mix was to outlaw all the original translations of the bible into english (the lollard bibles of wycliffe and tyndale) and to replace them with an 'authorised' version. (much like the 'george w. bush bible' would be).

and saint augustine of canterbury's function was to destroy the british church (which was mainly celtic, but had many english followers) and replace it with a centralised organisation taking its lead from rome.

[edit2]

or to boil it down really small: you don't get to be a believer by knowing stuff.

The Church of England was started by King Henry the 8th...not King James. Are you ok?

Henry VIII broke it away from the Catholic church. However, the church in England was originally founded in the seventh century by St. Augustine of Canterbury.

That remains the position of the Anglican church in England today, that Canterbury is Augustine's see.

Not true at all!

It was founded during Henry VIII's time.

I suspect people are confused as he sponsored the first widely published and authorised English bible (The King James Bible) in 1611 - 77 years after the reformation and foundation of the C of E.

I know that Henry VIII started the Church of England so he could obtain a divorce and marry Anne Boleyn.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that Henry the VIII invented it so he could divorce his wives. There's this bit about national church jurisdiction/autonomy, but the bottom line was bending the rules to fit his interpretation of Catholicism. Seriously.

We call them Episcopalians here in the U.S.

The Church of England was formed when Henry VIII broke ties with the Vatican.

I don't believe that. King Henry the VIII th wanted to get a divorce/annulment and the pope said no. So he started his own brand of Christianity.

Henry VIII was the first head of the Church of England. He renounced the pope and declared his church independent.
