So long as an appliance is drawing a current, it is generally safe.
It only becomes a serious fire hazard when the appliance is switched off, but the mains socket is left switched on (as people often do with kettles, for example).
The risk does not comes from the appliance itself, but from the mains wiring inside the walls where you cannot see it. An open 'live' socket that is connected to a powered-down appliance is one of the main causes of house fires.
This is the main reason you should get the wiring in your property checked every 3-5 years. It might save your life...

Haha, no not really a fire hazard, but all the appliances in your house left on stand by can add almost £100/year to your electricity bill!

A tv won't catch on fire because it has been left on stand by, it will catch on fire if there is something wrong with it. In which case it a hell of a lot more likely to catch fire when you're watching it.

This may sound kind of silly but what we did was sit down on the couch (or whatever you will be sitting on) and stretch a long piece of string from our eyes to the wall....that's where we put the very center of the lcd tv. This allows for you to have it at the correct height for the most easy and natural viewing.

Yes it is. If a TV will catch fire it will when it is left on stand by. That is why you should always switch it off properly when leaving the house.

no but it is wasting lots of electricity.
prepare for a great elecricity bill when you get back.
plus if your tv overheats it could generate sparks and that is a fire hazard.
hope you got insurance
