Not only do they save lives but put thier OWN lives on the line wich doctors DONT do. I think if we paid the police, fireman and other people that are out there saving lives as much as doctors there would be more people wanting to do the job and maybe even less crime

Ok so now it is time for the Active Duty Paratrooper view of things. The reason we do not make as much is because if we did then everyone and their brother would want to come and try it out. What the military, police and firefighters do is not for everyone. It takes a special kind of person to step into harms way on a daily basis and not go crazy from the pressure or stress. If everyone joined the military then the problems on the streets would come with them and we would not be a very effective fighting force. Yes I do agree that we should get paid more(I barely make 30k a year) but I also see the reason why we dont. Doctors risk their sanity which is a pretty big thing to risk. I mean think about it how would you handle it if your hands were inside someone performing a delicate operation and they died and there was nothing you could do. Another thing whats all this about schooling? Yes doctors go through alot of it but then again so does the military. To be good at my job I have to go to school. Yes my schools arent as long as those that doctors go through but they are more demanding physically and mentally. Come to think of it your always in school if your in the military because if you are not deployed to a combat zone then your in training to become more proficient and capable at your job.

"How about 10 more years of education costing about 25OK to start? I am not saying police, firemen and military personnel shouldn't earn more, but it takes a lot of money and brains to become a doctor. Wages are set by supply and demand just like everything "

Wait a second Saab guy; are you saying police officers, fireman, and military personell are not as smart as doctors? Or are you saying because I'm a police officer I couldn't get the money to become a doctor? I don't complain about how much I make. I do it because I love my job, and wouldn't want to do anything else. Not because I'm not smart enough to do anything else. The difference between Police officers and Doctors....we don't demean others for their professions.

supply and demand.

Let's push thru the educational system / medical lawsuits, etc. the same number of fireman & policeman and make them doctors.

You'll see the salaries become a lot closer.

4 yrs of college, 4(?) yrs of med school and then an internship is a pretty big investement these folks are doing. Then, on top of that, -they've got to read up on all the new medical advancements going on.

Because you came become a cop fireman or join the military with a GED. To become a doctor you need a education

investment and return applies to career choices
doctors have to endure 4-5 years of pre-med courses and then proceed to 4 years of med proper, then another year for internship, then 3-5 years of residency training, then another ? years for fellowship training, and so on and so forth
add to this the financial aspect of medicine as a course
here in the philippines, privately owned med schools charge up to half a million pesos (or maybe more) per semester
students have to invest on books and instruments that are also not cheap

I wish I made as much as a doctor, but they need to be a smart person, with much more schooling than a police officer. I have a degree, but it is not required.

Supply and demand.

If it took 12 years of post High School education to become a fireman, then they would get paid more.

I don't think foot ball players should earn $12,000,000 salaries, but that's the way it is in a free market economy.

Because public servants are WAY underpaid! We go out every day and put our lives on the line for what??? $60k a year! That is crap! We are overworked and underpaid! Some of you want to talk about schooling? Fine - we can talk about that till you are blue in the face, but it comes down to the bottom line.....risk.....we risk so much every damn day and dr's - what do they risk?! NOTHING
