I have been online shopping for some years now, but I could have sworn that most stores will dispatch your items before debiting your account. I could be wrong, and maybe each store has their own policy. I bought something on CHristmas Eve, I havent received it, and havent been told when I can expect to receive it, but they have deducted it from my credit card.

Thanks for your responses. Just to update you, i called the store and they said that the delay was because it was not clear if the items are in stock or not.

SO basically they are not even sure that they have the items or not, yet they have charged me for it. What do you call that if not bad business practice?

To those who said they would be out of business, they could deduct my account once the items have been found. I think that is fair. However in this case they havent even located my items yet!! How can they charge me for something that they might not be able to provide?

In all my experiences, they debit it immediately if the item is in stock. Depending on the time and your particular bank-sometimes it would show up immediately or the next day. Now, if it was not in stock, they never debited my account until they had it in stock. I guess it is up to the company itself. If you think about it, if they shipped it out and then debited your account, what if you gave them the wrong card # or an over-the-limit card #? The store would be out the money (not good business practice).

Most ecommerce sites use a payment gateway system that automatically deducts the total amount of the purchase and shipping from your credit card. That's why you are only asked to click once on the order now button because you can be charged twice.

Before shipping the item, they already know if your card is good -- that you have enough money in your account, that your card is valid (e.g. expiration date is ok). Otherwise, they'll notify you when something is wrong with your card

Only the low tech ecommerce sites will not have this capability

They should have informed you on the site. Some sites state that the money will not be deducted from your account until the item is despatched.

Inform your credit card that you have not received these items, they will open a dispute for you.

Hope this helps and that things are sorted out for you.

They should deduct the money before they dispatch.

You'll probably found that its just to the time of year and postage, that you haven't received your goods. The company could not be working till after the new year or their couriers may only be doing an essential service.

no company will send goods until payment is made.
the Nigerians would put them out of business in a week.

THE ANOMALY COMES BECAUSE THE PAYMENT MAY NOT SHOW ON YOUR ACCOUNT AS PAID FOR UP TO FIVE DAYS, SO YOU THINK YOU HAVE NOT PAID WHEN IN FACT YOU HAVE.
