First of all, 4X4 low is geared too low for highway speeds. 4X4 low is designed for getting out of mud, snow and other type of terrain without spinning your wheels and digging in deeper. It is not designed for the road. It is also good for pulling, such as you would do if you were trying pull a stuck vehicle free using a tow strap or chain!

No matter how hard you push on the gas, the vehicle will not go very fast do to the gearing! In 4X4 low you would be lucky to get to 15 mph.

I doubt you could get it anywhere near highway speeds in low 4 x 4, nor would you ever want to.

Low 4 x 4 has a specific use, and it's not on highways at any speed.

If you made the attempt, you would soon blow either the transmission, engine, or both. Call me when you try it, I'll give you a discount on the tow.

It will use alot of gas, the explorer should run about 45 mph in low. It does have a rev limiter. The main problem with running in low is turning, all 4 wheels want to spin at the same speed. When making a turn the inside wheels need to turn slower then the outside wheels. Even at slow speeds you can try it and you will feel the wheel hop when turning

You will destroy the transfer case, overheat and possibly destroy the transmission, and possibly throw a rod in the engine due to the high RPMs. Not to mention breaking a driveline due to the high torque.

In my 96 Jeep Grand Chrokee I can push maybe 35MPG and that's almost redlining the engine even in overdrive with it in low range.

Low range 4x4 is for severe offroad use, not for highway use. You shouldn't even use 4x4 High range on the highway unless its slippery or you'll damage the drive-train.

You waste a lot of fuel due to the extra speed in rpm to maintain highway speed. You would probably blow the engine if it isn't limited in rpm.
