My boyfriend loves beagles, but because of our apartment restrictions, we can't have one. I found a few ads for "pocket beagles" or "English Loughner beagles" online, but precious little information exists. Is this a legitimate breed? Do they have some awful genetic issue because of inbreeding to make them that small? What's going on here?

yes I KNOW it's not listed on any registry... I kind of checked that out. The reason I ask is because my family had a great miniature australian shepherd - absolutely fantastic dog, but you won't find it registered anywhere (back then... now it's more popular, so it might be). Has anyone seen a pocket beagle or knows what they're like... BEYOND just saying that it isn't on a registry.

I'd beware of any breed called 'pocket', 'teacup,' 'miniature' or any such thing. I don't believe they are recognized by the Kennel Club Association of any country. Miniature breeds are simply the offspring of one small dog which has been bred to another small dog of the same breed. These dogs are more likely to have medical problems, as they are more likely to have been inbred. Take a look at this site, it does a good job in telling you more about what the 'pocket beagle' was, which does not exist anymore...

You can also find out more about beagles in general and if they are suitable for you and your lifestyle. Kudos for doing your research before taking the big step of buying/adopting a dog!

There used to be such breeds as pocket beagles; however, they no longer exist. Beagles are now "accepted" in two sizes only - 13" and 15". No responsible breeders should be breeding for a size smaller than this, so no, I don't think you will find a pocket beagle anywhere ethical.
If you want a dog smaller than 13", you can try the runt of a litter bred to be 13"...there is no guarantee that it will be much smaller. However, BE AWARE that runts often have more health problems and are physically weaker, it probably won't be worth it, and don't let any breeder scam you into paying more for a "pocket dog".

There are only 2 recognized sizes - 13" and 15" - Anything else has been created by scam artists (Like "Teacup" any-breeds) just for the sake of making more money.
Edit - Miniature Australian Shepherds are still not a recognized breed - Same concept as a "Pocket Beagle"...People just trying to create a smaller version for more $$$.

There are only types of recognized beagles, the 13" and 15" varieties. I would be extremely wary of anything labled "pocket". Rember, when people start breeding for size alone, the concern for other genes typically goes right out the window. I have never heard of the other name, and its not listed on the FSS (breeds not yet recognized, but will be one day if gentetic pool becomes large enough) registry for the AKC, so I personally would not consider paying for one.

No they are not legit and often lies.
I have a person living in my area that breeds their 15 pound feamle chihuahua with a 12 pound male the pups I know of have all gotten to be 12 pounds or more. These people sell them as teacup chihuahuas.
Now if you were to research chihuahuas you will find the standard for a chihuahua is a dog that is not to exceed 5 pounds. So where do htey come off selling these pups as teacup.
Also often these teacups, pockets, etc are often a weaker strain from the inbreeding. Tehy often don't live as long. They also have several health problems

No - they'll either be mixed breeds, ill-bred Beagles or both.
Look at the AKC and KC websites' breed sections - the only Beagle you'll see listed is a Beagle; if the AKC or KC haven't recognised it yet, it isn't an officially recognised or legitimate breed, whatever the breeder wants to tell you.

They have been around forever. All they are is just poorly bred Beagles that someone thought were 'cute" so they started breeding for small.
You need to be very careful when looking at them because quite often the reason that they are small is Dwarfism. If they are dwarfs being small is not their only problem.
Personally I wouldn't touch one with a ten foot pole.
