The most important thing to alleviate shin splints is REST! Training with shin splints will only continue to aggravate the injury and make them worse, possibly developing into a stress fracture. Rest for a few weeks. Resume light training and ice after each workout (whether it hurts or not!) and gradually build up your mileage base. Stretch the calf muscles and shins using steps, wall leans, etc. every day. Good luck, I know they hurt. Sometimes you just have to take a break and heal up...

I am always surprised when people still suffer with shin splints and don't seem to know either the cause nor the cure. Shin splints are caused by muscle imbalance. The front muscles are weak and the calves are strong.
The way to correct Shin splints is to strengthen the muscles at the front of the legs. Lie face down in bed with your toes hanging over the edge. Pull your toes upward against the resistance of the mattress. Try to work up to 3 or 4 sets of 5 – 10 reps each.
There are other variations of this, such as heel walking, hanging a paint can on your toes, or using the angle iron on bleachers to slip your toes under.

I don't get them, thank God, but my wife does. She does a calf machine workout at the local YMCA. She has found that if she does the calf machine, her shin splints are not as bad as they could be and that they stop hurting quicker. I don't know if it will work for everyone though.

the thing causing them is due to your calves being too strong and tight. You need to loosen your calves. massage them twice a day. dont overstretch them. light stretch is enough. Do some toe raises and lift your toes up continously and do sets of those. in the meantime you shouldnt run. hop on a bike or run in place in a deep pool.

Resting is always best, but if you have to run I would ice and stretch as much as possible before and after activity. In the long run, rest has always worked best for me.

1st of all ice. and then ice some more. then for excercises. stand on ur tip toes and jump. then just do that on one foot and then the other. then walk on just the heel of your feet. this should help a lil bit. then streatch them out...point your toes up as far as you can and reach down.
