The Roman Catholic church takes the "go forth and multiply" command in Genesis to mean that we aren't to interfere with conception. Therefore, they have a rule that says you can't use contraception.
Most Protestant denominations do not agree with this interpretation and, therefore, have no such restriction.
Some years ago, I searched the Bible for an answer to this question. I could find no support for the restriction. I am with the Protestants on this one.

Some Christians believe that all forms of contraception are sinful, for the reason mentioned above that we are told to go forth and multiply, and they believe that if God didn't want you to have a child, he would keep you from getting pregnant.
Other Christians don't have any resrictions on birth control, and leave it up to the couple to decide. Some are even okay with abortion.
Personally I believe that certain kinds of contraception are okay, depending on how they work. There are some that will actually terminate a pregnancy after the sperm and egg have joined rather than preventing the sperm and egg from joining in the first place. These are the kinds that should be avoided, as they are little more than early abortions.

I absolutely believe that contraception is vital for many reasons--health of the woman, financial reasons, and an expansion of free will for the woman to have a child when she chooses (hopefully in discussion with a husband). While I find abortion abhorent, I do not believe in telling a woman what to do with her body, and I get pushback from other Christians for that. Contrary to what people say, there are few federally-funded abortions, and the Bush Administration has cut off international aid to any organization that even has abortion as an option--to me that is wrong and short-sighted as unplanned pregnancies prolong poverty.

It is up to the married couple to decide.
To be avoided are abortive forms of contraception. The Bible does not forbid contraception.

Likely most families use them of all denominations. that is a fact. May not be the correct thing to do in all circumstances, but has to be a fact.
