Hi,
most VW's of this age will be able to use a multigrade oil of 15 W 40.
This will also apply to whether its a petrol or diesel engine.
However, if you go into your local VW dealer and give them your registration number they will be able to tell you exactly what oil you need.
Hope this helps!

I would use only Mobil On 0W-40. It has the highest ratings and exceeds VW requirements. Read the label. If your oil is gunky, de-sludge the engine first. Also, shampoo your engine bay to keep things showroom new.

its always a good idea to go to your local parts shop because some times you need a thicker grade oil pending on how much mileage you have done. if its very high mileage you might need thicker oil.

look at your owners manual, it will tell you, sometimes it has it listed on the oil cap on the engine as well....it could be anywhere from 5w-30 to 20w-50...or just call the local parts house, they can tell you...
