1) Size: England is and island, mostly cold, except for the NAD. America is a large part of a continent. We have different weather features, 3 diff mountain ranges and a lot of land.
2) America was "discovered" a long time after England and the hardships endured helped to make "American Character and Continuity". Essentially, although time has passed there are still many simularities btwn early americans and today's americans. Our frontier was one of the things that helped make Americans who we are, along w/ the flood if immigrants from all over depending on the time period.
3) America has a written constitution which can only be changed by a 2/3rds majority. England doesn't, they make up the rules as they go along, it is easier to change them. Also, elections are not set, they just happen whenever the leading party looses support. Also, America only has 2 major political parties (no 3rd party has ever won). England has a about 5, maybe more, political parties.
There are more differences... but this is all i could think of off the top of my head.

Your quoting Churchill for starters.

OK Firstly, you have the language. You use things like Cheque to ask for the bill, or restroom instead of lavy. Americans tend to be a bit more into image. Born salesmen. You sell your religion. You are less toolerant of divercity, unless from NY. You are family orientated but also worship fame and sucess.

I have also noticed that you are a nation of contrasts. It either doesn,t hurt or is agony. You have no concept of uncomfortable. You are either very fit or obese. Again, no middle ground. Very weird.

However, the most interesting point is your lack of historical knowledge. You will know about particular battles or local history to some extent, but overall you do not know whence you come. Ask the typical American a question about their own history, let alone anybody elses, and they will stare blankly at you.

Here is a point in fact. Not far from the White house is a museum. It is sited in an obviously important house of the period contemporary with George Washington. Ask the staff anything about the museum contents and they can tell you. Ask them about this obviously important building and its previous owners and they will stare at you blankly.

I could go on and often do.

Luck

Britain has a much older history.
Some major differences:
The USA has a written constitution, Britain does not.
The USA has no aristocracy (except of the wealthy), Britain does and still has a monarch.
The Brits are more polite and much better behaved. Take a look at the murder rates and crime rates of the two countries.
The Brits respect poetry much more than Americans do, and hence British poets have higher status than their American counterparts do (this is true of almost every country - poets have pretty low status in the States).
But Americans are more musical, and invented ragtime, blues, jazz, rhythm & blues, rock 'n roll, funk, rap, hip hop and so on.
The Brits have more holiday time than American workers do and more benefits. In fact American employers are cheap and demanding.
The Brits are also more liberal and more secular. Good for them! They aren't hoodwinked by hordes of mindless fundies.

A couple of things I've noticed from living in both places:
- Americans need a much larger space "bubble," while British people can sit or stand right next to you (basically on you) on the bus without thinking it is a big deal.
- Brits have much more of a wait your turn mentality, whereas in American every person is out for his/herself (find the shortest line in the grocery store, etc).
- Americans are overeager to attack you in their department stores and shops, whereas you have to physically go and ask for help in British shops and stores.
- Overall there is much more of a public transportation culture in England that there is in most of the US (partly due to logistics, but also choice).

Hope that helped!

Principally time and space.

In America a hundred years is a long time.
In Britain a hundred miles is a long way.

I've just bought a house that's coming up 300 years old.
(having sold one that was 250)
An American friend asked me "Do you have to show people round it?"
No. It's not even listed for conservation.

She said she'd just found a nice new house on an acre plot.
I said "That's not a house plot, that's a farm!"

Ok Nicole S, chill out. I don't know where you're at, but we refer to ourselves as "Americans", not "United Statians". Ask wanna be immigrants where they want to go and it's "America", "Amerika" or the like. Don't make a mountain out of a molehill.

A big difference I see is that here, our population is made up of numerous diverse ethnic groups. Where else can someone in a brand new car with GPS and all the goodies pass a horse drawn Amish buggy with nothing more modern than a vinyl slow moving vehicle sigh stuck on the back. Our greatest strength is that we all see ourselves as being "American" (take that Nicole), regardless of whether it's my eye doctor who immigrated here from Pakistan, my son-in-law who was born in Mexico City, the Nigerian guy who buys goat kids, my Amish friends or myself, a 3rd generation German-American on my dad's side and a Native American on my mom's side.

I do know that Muslims in England have had a hard time integrating themselves into English culture and as a result, they blow up subway trains and themselves. My eye doctor denounces the actions of militant Muslims as do local Pakistani motel owners because they have a vested interest in their adopted country.

We sure aren't perfect, not by a long shot. But here you can usually find opportunity if you're willing to look and work for it. Sometimes Americans come across as being arrogant, but maybe that's because we have something to be proud of. Not what our government does or gives us, but what we have made ourselves.

Raquel go back to school and stop writing so much ********. America wasn't discovered before England you dummy!!!

America is not the USA dumb @ss.. America is just a continent which many of you ignorants think USA is all.

North, Central and South America= America!!

Google the map stupid and see for yourself. Get a history book about the true history behind discovering this continent by the Europeans (Spaniards)

Columbus was Italian, but he worked for the queen Isabel of Spain And Columbus never reached the north of America. He died before so was invaded by the English pilgrims. Get an education estupida and stop writing nonsense without facts.
