''PLATONIC LOVE - A pure, spiritual affection, subsisting between persons of opposite sex, unmixed with carnal desires, and regarding the mind only and its excellences; -- a species of love for which Plato was a warm advocate.''

Dante's love for Beatrice in his ''Inferno'' fits the definition.

Love between Catherine and Heathcliff in E. Bronte's ''Wuthering Heights'' also comes to my mind.

How about Fanny Price and Edmund in Jane Austen's ''Mansfield Park?'' Fanny is certainly Austen's most criticised and least favourite character, but I personally happen to admire her gradual love for Edmund. In this case, I'd call Edmund's love for Fanny platonic in its full sense.

Jane Eyre and Rochester in C. Bronte's ''Jane Eyre''

Seems like the Bronte sisters had a pretty good idea of what true love is supposed to be like :)

Odysseus and Penelope in ''The Odyssey'' by Homer. Few couples understand sacrifice quite like this Greek pair. After being torn apart, they wait twenty long years to be reunited. How about that?!

As for my dream character, I think I found one in real life. As weird as it may sound, my boyfriend fits the description of Elizabeth Bennet while I'm the female version of Mr. Darcy. Oh well ... we function beautifully :)

Great question by the way.

i don't think unconsummated love is at all the same thing as non-carnal love. non-carnal love would be love without the desire.

the greatest of all english love poets called sexual intercourse 'the proper end of love'.

i don't think you will find platonic love in serious literature. serious literature deals only in truths.
