HOW do you do symbol equations?
I am really confused!

The symbol stands for an element. The subscript after the element's symbol tells you how many atoms of that element you have in the molecule. The number in front of the formula of the molecule tells you how many molecules of that kind you have.

Example: 2 H2 + O2 = 2 H2O tells you that two molecules of hydrogen (each containing two atoms), and one molecule of oxygen (containing two atoms) react to make two molecules of water. Notice that there are four H, and two O, on each side of this equation.

Since atoms are neither created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction, the total number of atoms of each kind has always got to be the same on the left-hand side (reactants) and the right-hand side (products).

If this does not answer your question, you need to be more specific about what your problem is.

Good luck!

Learn off the symbols of the first 22 elements in the Periodic Table.Once done work out valencies eg In group 1 Li,Na K all have valencies of 1.In group 2 Mg and Ca have valencies of 2.Likewise group 3 has valency of 3. These have all positive valencies. Group seven has valency of 1.Group six 2 Group five 3 Theses are negative valencies. Consider iron Magnesium reacting with sulphur.Magnesium Mg has positive valency of 2.Sulphur has negative valency of 2.Therefore Mg +S=MgS.Consider Sodium reacting with Oxygen.Sodium has positive valency of 1.Oxygen has negative valency of 2.Therefore 2Na +S=Na2S
