Considering that this is sort of an "apples vs. oranges" question, "Yes."
No, they didn't have the electronic gadgets we have today, but until the mid 80s or so, neither did we. What they did have were sprawling cities, governments (albeit monarchical dictatorships), artisans, businesses, and an infrastructure.
These were not simpletons running around in the forests of Mesoamerica naked and living off tree roots. They were farmers, mathematicians and politicians. Children in the Aztec (Mexica) culture were sent to school at age 15 to learn math, history and politics. The Mayans were mathematicians who created one calendar of 360 days and created another calendar that calculated the orbit of Venus to be 584 days. A modern computer calculated the same orbit to be 583.9 days.
Human sacrifice? Yes, they did do that as part of their religion and it wasn't pretty, but it was how they believed.
They had two negatives that allowed conquest by the Spanish. One, their weaponry was very primitive and secondly, they had not been exposed to the diseases that Europeans had. Millions died in the 1520s, after the Spanish had been here a few years, allowing for easier conquest.
If the Spanish hadn't conquered them, you'd be speaking Nuatl right now.

No, NOT really. This is NOT to say that taken as an aggragate, they were below par either. They had as advanced a civilization as anyone could have for their times.
You can gage a civilization for its moderninity against todays standards by looking, NOT at their technology, but at their beliefs and attitudes towards their fellow human beings.
Under this method of calculation the Aztexs were as backwards as any known civilization in history, their technologies and advanced knowledge not withstanding.

I think they were great as astronomers. They did things by the moon and even held a celebration when they saw Venus.

No.
They didn't have electronics, they didn't have transportation like we do (cars, trains, busses, airplanes, even bicycles for that matter, etc). They were certainly advanced for the time but quite far behind the 21st century.
