I just figured out Bill Clintons first name really is William. So why not call him William or Will ?

Bill's a common, traditional nickname for William. It's just...like that lol. There's probably a reason for that, but many Williams go by their given name or Will too.

I feel people should not use nicknames they should use their given names. Bill is just another form of nickname for William

bill is the informal way to say william. you can also use willie like my cousin. we have 5 james in our family, we use jim , jimmy, jimbo and jambo. now jimbo and jambo was for us little tikes but jimmy and jim are informal ways to say james. like robert and bob or bobbie.
charles charlie and chuck. they are not nicknames.
just informal ways of saying the same name
