Hi, I need to tow a car for a friend, not far, I need to get it off a busy road onto a side one asap. Ive never towed before, so any hints and tips,or info regarding law would be appreciated, im going to buy a tow rope and on tow sign on the way!

Hi Helen, Not difficult to tow but can be scary if you haven't done it before. Earlier answers cover most things. Tow car should move slowly forward until tow rope is tight and then gradually increase revs until towed car is moving. Towed car should cover brakes ready to stop ( don't want to run into back of friend's car!!). Make sure you agree to how fast friend will tow you ( friend once towed me at 50mph - definitely scary!). Tow car should indicate clearly and in plenty of time when they are about to turn or stop - towed car should do most of the braking at first if possible and keep rope tight - using hand signals to each other also helps . Both cars need to be taxed and insured with qualified driver in each. When towing keep the rope tight, speed up slowly, make sure ignition is in the on position in towed car and putting on hazard lights when being towed is illegal, on tow sign should be used and indicators etc should be used to let other road users know where you are going.
Note that power steering will be hard to turn and brake pedal will need more pressure to stop vehicle.
You could call private towing business and get it moved without stress and in safety for anything from £40 - £200 depending on who you call

In addition to above, both cars must have valid MOT cert. A thing to remember is "front car pulls, and rear car brakes" Some degree of cooperation is needed between the 2 drivers to keep thgs smooth and safe. Drive slowly so if the tow car has to brake suddenly the trail car can stop within the length of the tow rope. That saves your bumpers! The worst thing that you can do is to let the rope get slack so the trail car runs over the rope. That can really spoil your day

DO NOT BUY A ROPE, instead buy a towing BAR. This is a metal bar that replaces a rope and is much safer ie. the towed car cannot hit the towing car. I have had a bar for many years and it has been used on many occasions.

Both cars need to be legal as do the drivers
You are not allowed to tow on a motorway or on the hard shoulder
You are not to exceed 20mph and you are now required to use a rigid tow bar.
A rope may be used to remove an obstruction from the carriageway but not to tow

well for starters your not supposed to tie the rope to the eyelet as this is only for securing the car when in transit,but if your careful,you can get away with it for a short journey,come to an understanding with the other driver about his or her braking,he/she should keep the tow rope taught at all times,this will stop the yo-yo affect and stop the rope from snapping,you must stay in low gear,pulling away very gently and braking early,but lightly,also have the hazard lights on,on the car being towed,and your headlights,so you can be seen by other motorist,they wont even notice your towing the car behind.

Take off slowly
Keep the rope tight while towing
Check that the brakes will work and that the steering is not powered or it will be heavy.
Make sure that the ignition key is in and on or steering will lock
No more than 15 feet between cars
Keep speed down
make sure that you signal at every turn and that the rear car does also.
