There is a leak somewhere. Or bad spill...

you have a leak, get it sorted a.s.a.p. chances are that it's only a small one so a bit of sealer will do till you can get someone in to fix it, you can get the sealer from any good hardwarestore.
once fixed you'll be wanting to get rid of the watermarks inside, in that case you just need to paint over it with a oil based undercoat, paint over it wide so you dont miss parts of the stain that is not showing yet, then just paint it like you would normaly, this is not a hard job, but it is important to do as the stain will just keep showing if it is not covered with the oil based undercoat first.

water has seaped into your ceiling. You need to find the source and rectify the leak. If not, water will continue to spread all over the ceiling over time

You have a leak somewhere above that area,hopefully it is a loose connection and not a broken pipe or a leaking roof.

I think your roof is leaking.I too have watermarks.I have a build up of ice on the roof and it's making my ceiling damp.

This could be simply from the vapor barrier, not good enough or none? it could be anything really, you don't give much information and, I'd have to see it.
