Edmund Morris wrote three biographies that are just wonderful. If the 18 year old loves political history, s/he will get a seriously good understanding of the modern era reading about Teddy Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan. Whether you agree with Roosevelt and Reagan or not, the glimpses into the real man that Morris gives are just wonderful in understanding the making of a natural leader and the emergence of the international political scene where every little piece works together with every other.

The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt (1979)
Dutch: A Memoir of Ronald Reagan (1999)
Theodore Rex (2001)

It would depend on what era the 18 year old was interested in; what type of books they like to read; etc.

For instance, if the 18 year old was interested in Roman History, Gibbon's Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire would be a good bet. On the other hand, they might think it terribly boring, and enjoy a historical novel, such as the Marcos Didius Falco series of detective novels by Lindsey Davis.

It all depends on the person you're buying the gift for, so it's hard to give a definitive answer.

A great deal would depend upon what people and/or eras the 18-year-old might find interesting.

Perhaps the best way to give a gift such as you would like might be to take the prospective recipient to a book store and allow him/her to choose.

If it is someone who is into Romance, Drama and Tragedy?

I suggest getting them a book called "A Lifelong Passion: Nicholas and Alexandra there own story." Complied by A. Maylunas & S. Miroenko.

It contains the diaries, personal letters and memoirs of the last Russian Imperial family. Even the recounts of their tragic deaths in 1918. With some beautiful photographs and portraits.
