Because people have psychologically come up with the idea, thats its a "new year, a new beginning, a new clean slate"...For some people, that ideology works, they're convinced and actually stick to their resolutions. Others, know and realize in the back of their minds, that in the time it takes to count down those last 10 seconds from one year to the next..they havent changed a whole lot and they'll probably procrastinate as much in the new year as they did a whole 10 seconds ago.......SO....they fail at their "New Years Resolutions"....and thats why people make them!

Because people like to think they can make a difference in things that bother them. And with a new year ahead they can rub away all the dirt from the past and start fresh.

So, many continue to make resolutions because they believe that next year will be different;

New Year, New Start. Seldom lasts, though I have so far this year managed to keep a diary for the first time ever! And Heaven knows, I need it!

Because people feel like they need an a time and date to give them an excuse to do something positive. They think "New year, fresh start".

However, they pick the wrong month. Most people suffer from SAD over November - Feb time.. So why spend Dec, Jan and Feb which are the worst time of the year to do things you enjoy, let alone give up things you enjoy? Thats probably why people dont stick to them!

I think we should try and introduce "New year sins"...things your gonna start to do, or going to increase..

ie.

"Im going to drink loads more this year"
"Im gonna get FAT!"
"Im gonna smoke until I can blow smoke out of my ......"
"Im gonna cancel my gym membership"

Things like that!
