Do you think the reason why this is the case is because Hollywood is trying not to offend political or religious conservatives, and also to appeal to heterosexual male audiences? For example, almost all of the main characters in "The L Word" are feminine.

Would you like to see more portrayals of butch lesbians onscreen in mainstream movies & TV shows?

This year, there was an American independent comedy film called "Butch Jamie" that actually features a butch lesbian in the lead role:

if they pick lipstick lesbians, the movie will appeal to the gay population, men (who can fantasize about two women they find attractive), and straight women (who can relate to women who are feminine in appearance). unfortunately, not a lot of groups in society right now outside of the lesbian population feel that they can relate to butch lesbians.
it's stupid and ridiculous, but i think that's the reason.

The prettier, more feminine lesbian is appealing to str8 men AND women and admittedly to lesbians like myself. I don't believe there should be a butch/fem stereotype as most lesbians I associate with fit neither category...they are women. I like seeing women and men being just that and their sexuality being second nature and not particularly the focus. It's the stereotypical flaming f*g and d*ke boi that confuses the str8 when they see otherwise.

I think that most of these films are "drama" genre. So, in my opinion, butch lesbians portray themselves as non-emotional in other peoples' eyes (similar to men).
So Lipstick lesbians fit the rolls more often. They are so emotional. Plus its more attractive to all audiences. To be blunt everyone hetero thinks of lesbians as butch so these films including lipstick lesbians actually promote lesbian society.
One show that is butchie is "bad Girls" on Logo network.

personally, i would rather watch the feminine lesbian movies and i even think that butch les. would rather watch hot women making out as well since butch lesbians are usually more attracted to lipstick les. anyway in general.

I think the closest you are likely to get is Lea Delaria.. (who is absolutely hilarious... I would love to see her in more films)

It's a double standard... (although, I must say.. The L Word HAS always had both butch and fem.. you just have to look a bit closer to figure it out. )

I personally would rather see people that don't necessarily fall in either category.. I know I don't..

but, for another movie.. check out Big Dreams in Little Hope..

i have to agree with the above answers...nobody wants to see a big, butch lez on the screen....advertisers aren't going to spend money to portray someone who isn't 'beautiful' and the studios and networks are all about selling the 'ideal' and not the norm....the only way you're going to see the real life version of things is on the discovery channel documentaries on prison life or indie films that don't require alot of ad dollars coming in to fund the programs.....besides the fact that your aren't going to grab a big male audience unless both the chicks are hot
