Hi.There are two ways to clean a record. [1] Use a professional record cleaning machine- fairly expensive [2] Do it yourself with a few chemicals and brushes. If you do it yourself you will need
DISTILLED WATER.
DETERGENT
ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL
3 VELVET BRUSHES
PLASTIC CONTAINER WITH SPRAY NOZZLE.
It is a bit long to post here ,so if you are interested contact me for the instructions.
This is a legitimate cleaning system taken from an article of Australian HI FI Magazine,1984. "How to deep clean your Records".

Depends how bad they are and how they've been stored.
You can buy cleaning kits which use a solvent fluid to loosen the debris trapped within the grooves. Like this: http://www.retrovinyl.co.uk/recordcleaning.htm
Quite expensive for a lot of records tho'. Some say that a quick dip in the sink with a touch of washing-up liquid will work - not so sure about that.
For lightly dirty records, just play them through a number of times and clean the stylus every time. Get some anti-static inner sleeves as well as they prevent dust ingress in the first place...

They still sell record cleaning kits in stores such as Circuit City.
It comes with a brush, and a solution to put on your records to clean the records in a circular motion, never against the grooves,it will scratch them.
It is an alcohol based solution.
The kit sells for about 15.00.

Mild detergent and luke warm water works well, use a sponge to apply in a circular motion, stay away from the label,, use a lint free soft cloth, not paper towels or tissues, in a circular motion to dry.
