I think it would be fascinating to understand why stock categories with a prolonged losses continue to sell for positive value. This defies the simplified economic models that I learned in school. Markets are supposed to be rational, but they obviously are not.

There's speculation, for instance, that an airline company stock is valued for its volatility. Timing the upswings and downswings on a very volitile stock can make good money for a smart investor (who likes to gamble).

Airline stocks (since deregulation) have been losing billions of dollars, yet, people still buy and hold. The pheonomenon of high capital cost, new entries to the market with lower prices (force ticket prices down), and increasing oil prices (read about PEAK OIL). Companies are making money in the airline industry, but they are not the airlines. The airlines have high cash flows, but negative profits without hedging fuel costs.

? Price Competition + Capital Costs + Rising Fuel Costs ?

Even Southwest Airlines will lose money because they can no longer hedge their fuel costs (that was the only reason they were in the black last year).

I'd check out this market and try to get just a little bit of understanding of this phenonmenon. Are investors just plain stupid?

Why don't you do a paper on how companies can actually make more money by stopping pollution rather than creating pollution?

You could study companies that reuse the pollutants to make other products or to sell the clean results of their pollution control.

Take care,

How about the effect of video games on the economy. Kids say that they would die without them, but what would happen to the economy?

Also, you may want to learn how to spell dissertation. It is di, not de. Just helping! :)
