Taken from a letter of a victim of sexual abuse:
Let me say first that I am a victim of rape. I fully support a registry of sex offenders that protects me and others from this evil act of control. I have found, however, that the registry is cluttered with names of persons who are not rapists, but are labeled as such because they had a a lapse in judgement. One example in particular is that of a man seduced by a fourteen year old girl who obviously was lacking in parental guidance. Did he commit a crime? Yes he did. Is he remorseful? Yes, he suffers with his guilt every day. Is he a Rapist? HELL NO!!!!! He may have shown poor judgement, but she played her part too, and so did her parents. How fair is it to me, a victim of forcible rape, that when I look to see what sex offenders may live close to me and my family, that I see names like this posted there? This undermines what happened to me, and makes a mockery of my suffering.

That young girl got exactly what she wanted and I got something I never asked for. Is this man in the same class as the men who raped me? No he is not. I have no reason to fear this man at all. The likelihood that he would ever make such a mistake again is nonexistent. Will the men who raped me reoffend? Yes, they most surely will. Why? Because they enjoyed what they did, and it had nothing to do with sex. I hope that my story will help others to see how cluttering the registry with such names gives people a false sense of security, while ruining the lives of good people who have made a mistake. Rape is no mistake. It is an intentional, evil act of control.

I saw this letter and it made me think. What are your thoughts?

I think the point she was trying to make was not that the guy who made the mistake with the 14 year is not a sex offender. But he is not a violent sex offender that everyone needs to lock down there house for. I think she was saying that when you consistantly build up the registry with people who are not predators, you risk making the registry a tool that is very hard to use for parents and police officers.

There will always be people on these lists that have made VERY, VERY STUPID MISTAKES that are not necessarily a danger to the community that they live in. It is too bad that people do not know the complete story behind why these people are listed as sex offenders.

I'm sorry about your story. I feel deeply about your story. I have a story of my own. I knew a school friend (back in high school) who got raped. I know how hard it is. Dont get my answer the wrong way even though the people on the database some of them might not be rapists but they are sex offenders. Thats why they are called sex offenders.
The sex offender started with the Megans Law. Where some sick psycho had a thing for small children one day raiped and killed a poor innocent girl. Imagine this if your with a 14 year old girl they you have issues and if that 14 year old girl tells the adult shes with to stop I can guarantee you he wont. Because they are already sick to begin with. Any Sex offender is sick in the head. But when raip is involved and Im there hold be back cause ive been a 18 year black belt (Judo) and I will break every bone in their body. Thats how i feel.
They should castrate Rapists so other rapists will learn theyre lesson and think twice before doing anything.

Well, it makes me think also! I feel sorry for that girl having been raped. I agree that a lot of people listed in the sex offender registries are not rapists. And I'd be interested in knowing if a murderer lived or worked in my neighborhood, yet they don't have to register. I think it should either be a registry of all violent felons or something like that. Some people on the sex offender registries were not actually convicted of felonies.

Very good point. Did you know that if you urinate in public (like on the side of the highway) you can be charged as a sex offender for your "indecent exposure"? I think it is ridiculous that the same person that has consensual sex with someone who is underage, someone that rapes someone else, someone that pees on the side of the road, and someone that is a pedophile are all grouped together and put on the same list. I think there should be separate lists for separate crimes. I also think they should have other lists for other crimes. I think we should have lists for murderers, physical abusers, thieves, drunk drivers, etc.
I figure that if you are going to out one group of people for their crimes, you should out the rest of them as well. But whatever the list is for, it should be far better sorted than the sex offender registries.

well i went to prison for murder did 16 years paroled out. was out for 9 years and suddenly they found an arrest as a juvenile for a sex offense. mind you only an arrest, it seemss that since im on parole that if i have ever been either or--- arrested and charged or indicted or jailedfor any sex offense with a child then i must now register. i was told id only have to register for 5 years. thaT WAS 1999 i am still having to register and have 34 years of parole left. what i did as a juvenile was not forced, we were both under aged and had consenual sex. that is why i was only arrested and released.
but seem there is a code m on the parole certificate that says i agree to any additional servitude the parole board feels necessary to add. this offense was 35 years ago and its come back to haunt me. im more like ly to kill some butte head than sexually assault some one

A lot of people don't know that there are many people on the sex offender registry that were convicted of acts that aren't even illegal anymore - specifically people convicted of "crimes against nature", such as homosexual conduct, before such laws were struck down.

If he knew she was 14 then he is a sex offender. Everything comes in degree's. One should consider what prison does to a person. Anyone coming out of prison should be considered dangerous because prison is so savage.
