Sometimes, I'm afraid, people have a hard time believing others will accept what they have to say if it's the truth. Originally it was just something they wanted to hide once. Pretty soon it becomes habit and the imaginary version of the story always seems better than the real version even when there's nothing wrong with the truth.

No, a compulsive liar is not automatically a cheater too. Unless of course they've cheated and lied about it...then add cheater to the list. I've learned that compulsive liars lie because they honestly believe their lives are nothing exciting to talk about...which usually means they have really low self esteems. I know it causes anger, frustration and pain, but making that person realize the actions of their lies, only encourages them to lie more so that they spare the feelings of those around them. I know it sounds odd, but it's true. Think about it, would you rather tell your loved one that they look like crap...or look for something nice to say? Even if you have to make it up. Most liars start off with those little lies to spare feelings, then it just becomes habit. If you want to break the habit, focus on the honesty...even if it's the most mundane of a detail. The more interest you show in what truth that person actually tells, the more likely that person will be to share the truth. And here is another point to ponder. Picture yourself as a child who just got into trouble. we've all been there and we've all lied to spare the consequence of a stupid action. If this person knows that you are going to be mad about something he/she has done...you are going to get a lie. If you react differently, you might start getting some truth. I wish you a ton of patience honey, you are going to need it.

It doesn't happen that way. It happens the other way. Your premise is incorrect.
I think that immaturity leads to compulsive lying. You also need a very good memory, to keep your stories straight. As you get older, you begin to forget what you've said before, and people hold you accountable. Eventually, you learn to respect yourself and other people who have integrity and will tell the truth (even in court) when it can cost you time and money.
I think that children tend to be compulsive liars, and they turn into truth tellers. Near the end of life, most people become very truthful and honest, because they don't have time to waste.

They turn into compulsive liars when they see that lying is a good course of action to attain the means that they want. This is further enforced when their lying is never questioned, enabling them more. Also, growing up in an unstable home will contribute to this. Of course, this is all just one example of how it can happen, there's always more and different ways.

Compulsive liars may be lay-outed as such thru the effect of their own nature and circumstances. It might even be their karma as seen in the good old Indus way.
Turning into compulsive liars may be due to some starting telling lies for some convenient impulsive reason due to some circumstance, due to some selfish reason of self-defence and reputation,
and thus, seeing that it more or less gives the wanted results, that it more or less eases the situation for oneself, indiscriminately going on indulging in telling lies.
The compulsive habit of telling lies may thus be compared to any other habit, for instance like smoking, like regularly scratching one's own ears, like drinking more and more immoderately and thus becoming a drunkard, or like being tempted to take some drug just to see how it feels and then going on and becoming a drug addict, or like the obsessive focusing on sexual things.
Wanting to get rid of such a habit of telling lies might require a very diligent exercising in avoiding to tell a lie whenever one feels tempted to deliver a lie instead of more or less plainly delivering the truth.
When one feels that bluntly telling the truth is painful and is going to provoke painful or embarrassing consequences,
one might try and honestly graciously manipulate the truth in a mitigating way that may give a good effect for oneself and for others while not being felt as a lie.
One might try and assiduously exercise in telling the truth, in telling the embarrassing or painful truth in an elaborate acceptable way, like giving bitter medicine mitigated with the addition of some sugar.
One might try and diligently exercise in telling the truth as one's own precious quality thru glowing words, always trying to make that truth appear in a mitigated not so embarrassing way, with primarily the aim of avoiding serious conflict, of avoiding crude enmity, of avoiding some resentment that might endanger one's own situation and one's own love and belonging.

lying is cool, it's a skill that takes mastering, almost like acting. You really have to hone the skill before you can be a compulsive liar, have a silver tounge if you will.

It is sometimes fun to tell a lie and build off of that, because people want to be something else or want something different, so if they lie....it's like they are living that dream of theirs.
Also, they could just be hiding something they never want anyone to find out about.

Lies make people sound more interesting.
They don't have anything truthful that will catch people's attention, so they lie.
Or they lie to save themselves from an awkward situation

Fear.
Some of them would rather lie than having to say the truth and face the consequences.
