but you have a ps/2 adaptor from a previous ps/2 or usb connected mouse ,would it work if i plugged the usb into the adaptor and then plugged it into the ps/2 mouse socket at the back of the pc

Yes. You can even buy the USB -> PS/2 connectors at a computer store (I saw them in one store locally).

YES,BUT YOU HAVE NO NEED TO DO THIS,USE BOTH MICE.The ps/2 mouse can be coupled and being used as well as the usb coupled mouse.Then you can use either as you see fit,i have a slow trackball mouse on my ps/2 socket and a very fast (BELLS AND WHISTLES)Intellipoint mouse on the usb socket.They have both been coupled and used for 2 years now with no problems,i have uprated to intellipoint 6.2 now,also with no problems.An Indian technician has developed a program which allows up to 10 mice to be used on one pc,this is very useful in Indian schools,for more interaction and hands on experience for the school kids when they cannot afford more than one pc.

Only way to be sure is to test it though
