A kind of coming of age type play? The difference between a boy and man are his responsibilities.
Realization that we are made a man by character perfection. To labor not for bread alone, but also to build virtues such as
Fortitude-ability to withstand all pain and pressure in the sustaining of doing the right thing
Prudence- Using knowledge and experience to produce wisdom that guides your decisions towards the best possible outcome.
Temperance- Learning when to subdue your passions and moderate your desires with control.
Justice- Not only holding others to the standard of law and order, but yourself and your judgments of others. Learning to temper justice with kindness is grace, and grace saves the soul.

Lots of things. Ability to learn. But Lazzerus Long (sp) said it well, if I can remember, it's been a long time. Something like a man must know how to grow a garden, cook a tasty meal, fix a leaky roof, diaper a baby, be a role model to the young, be able to do a mathmatical equation, shoe a horse, sow a button, fix a car, help with a broken heart, plan an offense, plan a defense, fight like a demon, and die honorably. Specialization is for insects.

Someone who has an honorable code of ethics and morals and sticks to them when it would be easier to do something else. Someone who is truthful when it may put him in a less than perfect light. Someone who treats his family the same way he treats his best friends.
I kind of like the old western "man" described by Zane Grey or Louis L'Amour. They had codes to live by..do the right thing even if it's the most difficult thing.

Some go with just age (18 or 21 in America, many times it is younger than that in other cultures). Some go on whether you have had sex or not.
Many cultures have a one or more rites of passage that must be done or met before the boy can become a man.
Personally, I consider a boy to have become a man when he has learned to sacrifice. When he has learned the value of giving up certain things he likes for things he considers more important; whether for himself or for family or friends, he is a man when he can make himself do it (and doesn't need a parent or guardian to make him do it).

To balance strength with sensitivity.
To temper wisdom with humour.
To be honest and honourable.
To stand up for what's right and not fall for what's wrong...
or maybe I'm an idealist. Perhaps there is no such thing as a perfect man but I've been fortunate enough to find someone awfully close...
:)
Cheers
