The answer is 6 = x.
4x - 2 = -8 + 5x
4x - 4x - 2 = -8 + 5x - 4x
-2 = -8 + x
-2 + 8 = -8 + 8 + x
6 = x
Check your answer.
4x - 2 = -8 + 5x
4(6) - 2 = -8 + 5(6)
24 - 2 = -8 + 30
22 = 22

4x - 2 = -8 + 5x
4x - 2 + 2 = -8 + 2 + 5x
4x - 0 = -6 + 5x
4x - 5x = -6 + 5x - 5x
-x = -6
-x*-1 = -6*-1
x = 6

4x - 2 = -8 + 5x
okay, so with this question you need to collect like terms - all x's on one side and all numbers (that are not attached to x's) on the other side. Remember to change the sign when you swap sides with a term. You should get all numbers on left and all x terms on the right hand side, this makes life a little easier as you have positive x.
-2 +8 = 5x - 4x
then simplify and find x = ?.
6=x
x=6
so if it were a mutiple like 6x=12, to find x you need to divide the right hand side by the coefficient (thing that x is timesed by) so you get x=12/6 so x=2, though sometimes the numbers arent as nice as this!
Good luck, keep going with the maths!

Get all your x's on one side.
4x - 2 = -8 + 5x
Take 4x from both sides, that gives -2 = -8 + x
Add 8 to both sides
6 = x
