For this, we have to do what is called "Combining like terms", where we combine all the terms that look the same so we can add and solve.

For example, say we have:

-1 + b = -b + 1

In order to combine like terms we have to get everything with a b on one side and everything without a b on the other side.

First step: Add b to both sides:

-1 + b + b = -b + 1 + b

-1 + 2b = 1

Second step: Add 1 to both sides:

-1 + 2b +1 = 1 + 1

2b = 2

Now we divide both sides by 2:

b = 1

Ok, now let's look at your problem:

0.5b + 3.4 = 0.2b + 12.4

First step, subtract 0.2b from both sides:

0.5b + 3.4 - 0.2b = 0.2b + 12.4 - 0.2b

0.3b + 3.4 = 12.4

Now we subtract both sides by 3.4

0.3b + 3.4 - 3.4 = 12.4 - 3.4

0.3b = 9.0

b = 30

There you go.

0.5b + 3.4 = 0.2b + 12.4
multiply both sides by 10 to eliminate the decimals;
5b+34=2b+124
5b+34-2b=2b+124-2b
3b+34=124
3b+34-34=124-34
3b=90 divide both sides by 3;
b=30

(1) 0.5b + 3.4 = 0.2b + 12.4
[This is the original problem.]

(2) 5b + 34 = 2b + 124
[Move the decimals to make them all whole numbers.]

(3) 5b + 34 = 2b + 124
.....-2b.- 34 = -2b - 124
-------------------------------
3b = 90
[We now have a simpler equation.]

(4) 3b = 90
----------------
3 / 3

90 / 3 = 30

B = 30

Very simple, just add like terms...
Subtract .5 b from each side.
Then, once you have that, subtract 12.4 from the other side.
Once you have an integer on the left side, and your variable on the right, divide by the variable's number on both sides!
I checked the math, that is correct.

0.5b+3.4 = 0.2b+12.4
0.5b - 0.2b + 3.4 = 0.2b -0.2b + 12.4
0.3b + 3.4 - 3.4 = 12.4 -3.4
0.3b = 9
0.3b / 0.3 = 9 / 0.3
b = 30

0.5b+3.4=0.2b+12.4
0.5b-0.2b=12.4-3.4
0.3b=9
0.3b/0.3=9/0.3
b = 30

first move all the decimals to the right one.

so the n it looks like this

5b+34=2b+124

then subtract 2b from 5b

so then it becomes

3b+34=124

then subtract 34 from 124

then 3b equals 90

3b=90

then divide both sides by three to isolate the variable

b=30
