Is there ever such a thing in any of the books? Isn't the fundamental law concerning wands is that a wizard or witch cannot do spells without it? If there was such a thing as wand-less magic, a highly skilled and powerful wizard like Dumbledore could have performed one to save his life (regardless of what he and Snape planned). However, if we get right down to it, we could say potion-making and herbology are wand-less magic.

Edit: Leria below me have some good points. House Elves and other wizarding creatures have their own brand of magic that does not require wands.

In the wizarding world, magic control is related to emotion. when you get really mad or really upset you lose control and stuff happens. but you can't predict what will happen.

wands are there to channel magic- to make the magic do what you want it to do and the more proficient you get, and the more mature and less emotional strain, crazy things don't happen as much. so as harry and his friends got older, their control got better.

...for humans anyway, other magical creatures don't need wands.

Hmmm...I remember it featuring more prominently in Half-Blood Prince and Order of the Phoenix, because of the Occlumency lessons and such. I'll have to look that up.

only dumbledore was able to do it, and as he died it would obviously no longer play a big part in the last book
