I'm thinking it might give the world the idea that we just might be able to shift from the old paradigm ruled exclusively by white, middle aged men.

I think there's some truth in your logic. I think that having a woman or minority Prez will also improve our image if said Prez gets us out of the mire we are in in Iraq and if they work on our Middle East policy.
I have always thought it reflects badly on the US that we have had neither a woman nor a minority President. Other countries, countries which we consider, in our vanity, to be less advanced than we are, have had women leaders. Why haven't we, and what does it say about us?

I don't know. Possibly. It certainly won't affect my opinion of the US (I don't have a huge problem with them).
It could very well do so, although it may make it worse though, especially in the eyes of certain cultures and countries - especially a female president.
But that doesn't mean that a female or minority person should be elected simply to improve their image - they should elect who they feel would do the best job - who cares what other people outside their country think?

Any impact it would have would be brief. In the long run our image will be more affected by her policies, and the treatment she receives in congress and by the general public.

about the woman thing...**** no. a lot of countries see women as weak. and if they see we're letting a woman lead us, they might get violent or something. this is why hillary clinton cannot get into office...that and other things.
