This is all pre 9/11, but my dad was a marine there, and we were nearby on a family vacation in 1984. We went to the gate and got permission to go in and see at least parts of it. This may be a very different story today. I don't recall anything about cameras, however, my family is rather camera happy and we don't have any pictures from the camp, leading me to suspect that we were not allowed to take cameras with us. 9/11 may have changed all of this.

Ask yourself this: Is it really wise for your friend to even have these pictures in Iraq? Imagine if he was captured by some combatants and these pictures fell into their hands. Could they be used against the U.S. in any way?

Go to the front gate in North Oceanside. I hope they don't allow you to go on base and take prictures though. If you want beach pic's you can get plenty besides the 20 miles of Pendleton.

In fact hopefully you already have caught someones attention by asking this question

You might be allowed to visit. It can't hurt to call and find out.
