Atlantis (in Greek "island of Atlas") is the name of a legendary island first mentioned in Plato's dialogues Timaeus and Critias.
In Plato's account, Atlantis, lying "beyond the pillars of Heracles", was a naval power that conquered many parts of Western Europe and Africa 9,000 years before the time of Solon, or approximately 9500 BC. After a failed attempt to invade Athens, Atlantis sank into the ocean "in a single day and night of misfortune".
Some Atlantis theorists also believe that survivors who escaped the disaster went up the Nile River and resided in Egypt. They passed on their knowledge and advanced technologies to the ancient Egyptians and help them build the pyramids. Their race eventually died out and their secrets were kept away hidden in the pyramids as buried treasures for the ancient Pharaohs.
Secrets that were with held were believed to be the mystery of the universe and the origin of mankind. Others believe they were actually an alien race sent to help to civilize mankind.

For what it is worth, I believe Atlantis existed. If you'll excuse the expression, the smoke could not have lasted this long without the fire having been somewhere, at some time. It's hard to say where Atlantis was exactly, but I would suggest somewhere in the Mediterranean where a remnant land mass may still remain. Chances are Atlantis vanished in the flood. It may not have been an island either, but it's remnants may be islands. Try Greece as a possible starting point. Plato seems to have known something of the subject.

The island of Santorini which someone else mentioned has the ruins of a civilization which existed in 2700 B.C. The ruins are called Akritiri and the island was once a volcano known as Thera. When it exploded it sent tsunamis 800 ft high to the surrounding regions in the Mediterranean. Some have speculated that the eruption was the reason for the plagues in Eygpt and the so called parting of the Red Sea. Before the tidal wave rushes in the water rushes out. Anyway this is is a fascinating subject, there is no end to research that can be done. Hopefully someday we'll have answers to this kind of thing. Maybe someday we'll know what was in the Library of Alexandria too. The latter was not a myth but real.

Supposedly they have found evidence of an island that sunk off of the italian coast last year that was once part of the peninsula and thru volcanic activity slowly moved away from the mainland. Eventually a large earthquake caused it to completely sink. Last year when my mother in law was leading an american group of tourist thru Rome and Pompeii they uncovered a library and found evidence that Atlantis actually existed. I can't recall the exact location though, and the italian goverment got the tourists out of there pronto so I'm not sure if the info has been released fully or not yet. There did find manuscripts though concerning the island in the Library of Alexander. Plato turned it into a morat by my understanding. No crystals, super humans are nothing like that. Just the changing of the shape of the world as humans knew it.

I believe there must be some basis of truth to the existence of Atlantis. I think it is off the coast of Florida.

People used to think the city of Troy was fictional until they located it in Turkey in the late 1800's.

Supposedly located within the Bermuda triangle, the secrets of the city are undisclosed due to the fact that according to written text no vessel or human being has ever emerged through the triangle out the other side. It is supposed to have such a strong mangnatudal force that machinery or compass do not work.

In "Plato's Republic", Atlantis was an island beyond the straights of Gibraltar. He wrote of an island of five stades (925m) diameter that was surrounded by several circular structures some consisting of Earth and the others of water. Imagine a bunch of concentric circles surrounding the island itself.

There is no other record however of this place ever existing.

I believe in it, and I like to think that it used to be part of Malta.
Malta is home to the oldest structures on Earth, and there's a road near them that just leads into the sea like something was there before.
Plus it's close enough to Greece and the ancient civilizations that first wrote about it.
