I prefer SF.
The LA mindset is very different than SF mindset. Most people like one city or the other, very few like both.
I have friends in LA and visit at least once every year or so. I've lived in So. CA and don't care much for LA too spread out, too fixated on fame, money and superficial appearance.

I have lived in both cities, they're totally different. LA is great for people who love to sit in traffic. Seriously though, LA is so massive, it's like a state. If you find a place to live that's close to where you work, then life can be pretty good.
San Francisco is very small and compact. There more going on in SF in a 7 mile radius than in all of LA at any given time. That said, it's more expensive to live in SF.
Overall, San Francisco is a better place to live in my opinion.

I've lived in both cities, and they're each great in their own way. It really does depend on your particular taste.
The San Diego Union Tribune (a neutral party) did a side-by-side comparison of the two cities in 2006, and I think it's pretty much spot on:

I live in San Francisco, but I like LA a lot, too, except for breathing there.

I'd have to go with San Francisco. LA is just to spread out for me. I might not be living near work and I might have to spend hours in traffic just to get to work. I like SF because i'm closer to everything and it doesnt take as long to go places.

san francisco...it is home already. i am not a particular fan of LA's weather, too warm for me year round. and i am not much of a beachy type person. SF is a bit more "intellectual, thinker" type place the LA. LA is seen as being fun, laid back.

Hi--good question. I like San Fran & all, but I would have to say L.A. The weather is better, they have beaches, the people aren't as liberal, and unbelievalby it's cheaper.
