What are the advantages and disadvantages of a species mating for life and what are the advantages and disadvantages of a species mating with different individuals each breeding seasons?

with the breeding for life the parents will always be able to rely on the other for food and feeding of the young. but if one of the two dies its just like becoming a single mother or father. if the animals continue to vary mating partners they have a greater chance of passing on their genes. but the mother is stuck with the new borns.
