Maslow's hierarchy of needs states that one must first have all the needs below self-actualization to achieve it. Fulfillment of Physiological, Safety, Love/Belonging/Social and Esteem needs can bring about self-actualization but often requires a catalyst of some sort.

What's the best approach?

I got a good approach for you. Throw out your dogmatic science intructions out of your window. It will do you some good.

I don't think you can necessarily help someone else to achieve self-actualization. Certainly you can help someone by providing basic needs like food, water, shelter as well as social needs of love and security, but I think that once all other needs have been met that it is up to the individual to seek spiritual fulfillment and reach a higher plane of existence. You can offer them clues, try to show them the way, but they have to have the interest and be in the right frame of mind to accept it. And if the other needs aren't met, they won't even get there. If someone is starving, they don't have time to worry about whether they're loved. Life is just a struggle to survive. If a person doesn't have love, they will not be able to find spiritual meaning and inner peace. It is a pyramid and not everyone makes it to the top. Many get stuck on a level waiting for those needs to be met and going about it the wrong way. Education is probably the best approach. Provide the information and direction and hope that the person will understand. But the journey to the pinnacle is an individual one. Each person has to have their own epiphany or moment of clarity and reach the top on their own.

Facilitate or encourage the cultivation of peak experiences (e.g., arrange and help the person train to climb Mount Everest, to run a marathon, to give birth, to achieve something noteworthy).
