I live in So Cal too, and it kinda sucks having so few fish stores (I haven't found any that are terribly convenient). In Mission Viejo, there is a privately owned PET (not fish specific) store called the Sandbar [(949)-768-0422; 25571 Marguerite Parkway, Mission Viejo, CA] which I have found to have very healthy, reasonably priced fish, and VERY competent employees who put your fish before their business (which you will rarely find at chain stores). Seeing as southern Orange County is a relatively broad area, this may not be too close to you, but Window to the Sea (14061 Newport Ave - Suite A, Tustin, CA 92780) is a much more fish specific (likely more expensive) store that I would DEFINITELY recommend. I suggest that you check them both out!

Check your local phone book for locally owned fish and aquarium supply stores. This would be your best bet if you're looking for a healthy selection of fish. I try to avoid bigger chain stores because I prefer the one-on-one attention from smaller stores. The price may be a little higher, but the quality and service is worth it in the longrun.

Pet Supplies Plus and PetSmart is where I've gotten all of my fish- they've lived for over a year so I'm assuming they are healthy fish.
