There is no "average" because there is a range of instruments available from beginner quality to professional orchestral quality.

The Selmer 1430P (resonite) is probably the 'best buy' student instrument. It's around $1400. The Leblanc L7166 is about the same. The Vito L7168 is a little less. The Jupiter can be had for about $1300.

The Selmer Paris model 67 with range to low C retail at about $7295 and the Buffet Prestige 1193-2-0 is just over $8500.

So, student instruments are about $1300 and professionals are about $8000. There's something out there between both extremes as well.

bass? Um... well, I'm a bassoonist, so I'm guessing... but www.woodwindbrasswind.com would have a better idea for you.. I'm guessing $2000 for just a basic, but I could be off considering a normal "clarinet" is 300 to 700 for students/beginners.

It depends on whether you want a new or used one, used will be alot cheaper, look in an instrument store, they usually have pre-owned instruments.
