If you read your history, the atmosphere in Nazi Germany wasn't all that hostile. Most people were just going about their business. A lot of people in other countries thought Hitler was a good leader, because things were going so well in the country. That's how he managed to go so far invading other countries before the world noticed.
There was already a fairly rigid social class system in Germany at the time-Hitler only had to encourage it. The haves mostly had as more than they had after WW1 and the have nots were used to it being that way. Only Jews and other targets of the Nazis were noticing a big difference in their lifestyle.

Not only the Nazis, but just about every political party and nation, historical and current, uses the 'divide and conquer' technique to enhance their power and reduce that of their opponents.

First, the Nazis destroyed the Communists, since they provided the only real opposition capable of destroying them.. Then they started euthanizing the handicapped. Then they suppressed the Jews. Then killed millions of Slavs. They broke the power of one group before taking on the next.

However, I do not believe that the Nazis were ever in danger of being overthrown by the German people. Hitler became Chancellor by an overwhelming popular vote. When they were losing the war of course some of the Generals tried to kill Hitler. Their failure was an example of good intelligence and police work and proved that he had overwhelming support among his own people. That is why he could only be overthrown by an external force.
